Brian Shafer, M.D. specializes in sports medicine and athletic injuries with a particular interest in shoulder, elbow and knee arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. He is board certified through the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Shafer received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at San Diego and his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. He did his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Washington in Seattle and completed a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder and elbow reconstruction at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
As a fellow he served as a team physician for the University of Southern California Athletic Department, including the National Champion USC Football and Women’s Volleyball teams. In addition he served on the medical staff for the Summer X Games, and the Pac 10 Basketball and NCAA Volleyball Tournaments. While in practice in Arizona, Dr. Shafer has been an associate team physician for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and is currently the team physician for several local high schools, and remains an orthopedic consultant to USC athletics. He has lectured locally and nationally on sports medicine topics, and has authored numerous articles in orthopedic and sports medicine journals.
