Dr. Waslewski received his M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia in 1993 and then completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He also completed a Fellowship (Sports Medicine Surgery) at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama under the Directorship of Dr. James Andrews and Dr. William Clancy, Jr.
Dr. Waslewski’s performs all standard arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder including rotator cuff tears, labral tears, dislocation/instability, and impingement as well as all standard knee procedures including meniscus tears, ACL reconstructions, and cartilage defects. Dr. Waslewski is by far Arizona’s most experienced surgeon in the difficult field of hip arthroscopy. He also performs simple and complex elbow and ankle arthroscopic procedures.
In addition to hip arthroscopy, Dr. Waslewski has some additional unique areas of sub-specialty expertise including the care of the overhead and throwing athlete. Dr. Waslewski performs repairs and reconstructions of the shoulder and elbow including Dr. Andrews’ technique for the “Tommy John” procedure for ligament tears in pitchers’ elbows – a previously potentially career ending injury. Dr. Waslewski’s father, Gary Waslewski Sr., was a Major League baseball pitcher who played a crucial role in the 1967 World Series for the Boston Red Sox. Dr. Waslewski himself also played baseball, pitching four years at the Division I level for Princeton University. Current Dr. Waslewski is Orthopedic Consultant and Spring Training physician for the Chicago Cubs. His surgical training and his playing experience give him the unique ability to evaluate throwing/pitching problems from both the doctor’s and player’s perspective.
While Dr. Waslewski trained in Birmingham he learned the most current reconstructions of complex knee ligament injuries including those to the ACL, PCL and postero-lateral corner from the world famous Dr. William Clancy Jr., the creator of the ACL reconstruction surgery that is used today.
Dr. Waslewski was appointed orthopedic surgeon to the Phoenix Coyotes Hockey Team in the summer of 2004, a duty he shares with his partner Dr. Douglas Freedberg. Dr. Waslewski serves as the Head Team Physician for Central Arizona College and the Director of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for all five Scottsdale District High Schools. He is currently Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at Scottsdale Healthcare.
